CFT Group deals with tomatoes since 1945, when Camillo Catelli established our company in a small workshop in Parma. During these years CFT Group’s people have seen – and led – a lot of changes in the world around our favorite fruit. In this month’s newsletter we’ll have a look at the 2018 tomato production introduced by our Processing Sales Director Davide SARASINI, before moving to Algeria to discover CFT Group’s last complete tomato line installed in a factory located exactly where the Sahara Desert starts. Finally, we will have a preview on our next meeting, the most important one for the tomato industry, taking place on a boat for a cruise through the Aegean Sea: it’s the 13th edition of the World Tomato Congress, which will take place in June. Let’s start!

Let’s meet CFT Group’s Processing Sales Director Davide SARASINI for an interview on this year’s tomato production and processing outlook. “The World Processing Tomato Council has spread its forecast for this year: they speak about a production of 37 million mT, similar to last year. After an excess of production in 2009, the global processing trend is being constant”. This context holds great opportunities for the growth of processing industry companies: as Davide explains by commenting the forecast, “being a company with worldwide business deals makes these data very important to us. Above all, we look more willingly to trends and figures coming from the emerging markets, such as Algeria and Tunisia, Chile and Russia.

I can say that our sales managers are trained to always seek for new opportunities out there!” And what about our country, where 10% of CFT Group’s turnover is made? As you can see in the map on the side (published by the online magazine Tomato News), Italy is the second producer in the world, together with China and after California, with a record of 4,9 million tons a year, evenly split between Northern and Center/South Italy. The price of fresh product in Italy is another important aspect, as “87 euros per ton for round tomatoes is the highest in Europe, in fact many processors want to reduce it slightly: it will be a topic of discussion within the next months”, concludes Davide. According to its status of a mature market, we can’t expect peaks of growth, however the overall economic condition of the tomato industry remains healthy.

CFT Group is always exploring international markets to provide them with premium solutions and technology. This month a new factory for the production of tomato paste has opened in Southern Algeria: at FOUGGARA’s plant, located in the city of Reggane – where the tomato campaign starts in February and ends by mid-Aprile – CFT Group has installed a complete line, producing 1.000 t/day (41.6 t/h) from fresh tomato. The line is composed by the unloading and filtration system, the ELDORADO 1000 enzimatic inactivation’s plant, the GIUBILEO Twin refining system, the Venus T1000 TE evaporator, the OLIMPIC combined with the MACROPAK aseptic filling systems, to reach up to 36 BRIX drums.

This line is also equipped with CFT Group’s complete packaging solutions, composed of filler, seamer, conveyor pasteurizer, dryer system and manual case packing table, allowing to also fill cans of 400g and 2.2 kg. This factory has been funded thanks to the support of the rural development Bank since it is a capital project for the whole area as well as the local population. The World Processing Tomato Congress will take place this year from the 11th to the 15th of June, and for the first time in its history will be held on a cruise ship around the Greek islands. CFT Group is supporting this event as a Diamond sponsor and will present its new approach of Industry 4.0 / Smart Factory, launched in 2017: innovation in action! CFT Smart Factory enables a complete control over each phase of the production process thanks to different technologies that guarantee a non-stop connection with all the machines, therefore improving the whole product life cycle management.

CFT Group is a key manufacturing reference in the South American market, which represents an important area for the Fruit processing industry. In January 2018 we delivered a complete line for fruits and tomatoes to our Chilean customer Patagoniafresh, one of the largest apple juice concentrate processors in South America. Now Patagoniafresh can count on a complete line, from the unloading to the aseptic filling, able to obtain tomato paste by both Hot Break technology and Cold Break technology, as well as to produce apple, peach and pear natural purees and concentrates. This new project must be considered as a very important milestone for the long-lasting trade relationship between CFT Group and Patagoniafresh and as an essential product quality reference for the whole fruit concentrates industry.
